Problem 977

AIME late
Algebra Difficulty 5.9 Prove it Brazil

Problem:

Uma linha de trem está dividida em 10 trechos pelas estações A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,JA, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J e KK. A distância de AA até KK é igual a 56 km56~\mathrm{km}. O trajeto de dois trechos consecutivos é sempre menor ou igual a 12 km12~\mathrm{km} e o trajeto de três trechos consecutivos sempre é maior ou igual a 17 km17~\mathrm{km}. Determine as distâncias:

a) de JJ até KK;
b) de DD até HH;
c) de BB a GG.

This one wants a proof. Work it on paper, read the official solution, then mark yourself honestly — the ladder only means something if the record is true.

Official solution

Solution:

a) Podemos escrever AK=56AK = 56 e AK=AD+DG+GJ+JKAK = AD + DG + GJ + JK. Como AD,DGAD, DG e GJ17GJ \geq 17, então JK5JK \leq 5. Daí, para HK17HK \geq 17, devemos ter HJ12HJ \geq 12. Mas, sabemos que HJ12HJ \leq 12, assim HJ=12HJ = 12. A partir de HK17HK \geq 17 e HJ=12HJ = 12, concluímos JK5JK \geq 5 e a única possibilidade é JK=5JK = 5.

b) Por simetria, teremos AB=5AB = 5 e BD=12BD = 12. Agora, seguimos com
DH=AKABBDHJJK=56512512=22 \begin{aligned} DH & = AK - AB - BD - HJ - JK \\ & = 56 - 5 - 12 - 5 - 12 = 22 \end{aligned}

c) Por fim, GJ17GJ \geq 17, mas HJ=12HJ = 12. Assim GH5GH \geq 5. A partir de DG17DG \geq 17 e DH=DG+GH=22DH = DG + GH = 22, obtemos DG=17DG = 17 e GH=5GH = 5. Portanto
BG=BD+DG=12+17=29 \begin{aligned} BG & = BD + DG \\ & = 12 + 17 \\ & = 29 \end{aligned}
