Problem: Man bestimme alle Paare (x,y) ganzer Zahlen, welche die Gleichung 37x2−13xy+7y2=∣x−y∣+1 erfüllen.

Solution: Die Gleichung (1) ist symmetrisch in x und y, so dass wir zunächst x≥y annehmen können und für x=y zu jeder Lösung (x,y) auch (y,x) als Lösung erhalten. Mit d=x−y≥0 folgt 37d2+xy=d+1. Potenzieren liefert x2−dx+(−d3+4d2−3d−1)=0 mit der Diskriminante D=d2−4(−d3+4d2−3d−1)=(d−2)2(4d+1)≥0. Es ist also x1/2=2d±(d−2)4d+1. Für die Ganzzahligkeit von x muss 4d+1 eine Quadratzahl sein, und zwar das Quadrat einer ungeraden Zahl. Der Ansatz 4d+1=(2m+1)2 mit m∈{0;1;2;…} liefert d=m2+m, so dass sich x1/2=21[(m2+m)±(m2+m−2)(2m+1)] ergibt. Dies führt zu (x1,y1)=(m3+2m2−m−1,m3+m2−2m−1) und für m=1 zu (x2,y2)=(−m3−m2+2m+1,−m3−2m2+m+1) und den Lösungen (y1,x1) bzw. (y2,x2) für m>0. Eine Probe bestätigt, dass diese Paare tatsächlich Lösungen sind.
