Number theory Difficulty 1.3 Junior Find the answer Canada

If xx and yy are positive integers with 3x5y=2253^x 5^y = 225, then x+yx + y equals

Pick one

Solution

Since 152=22515^2=225 and 15=3515 = 3\cdot 5, then 225=152=(35)2=3252225=15^2=(3\cdot 5)^2 = 3^2 \cdot 5^2.

Therefore, x=2x=2 and y=2y=2, so x+y=4x+y=4.
