A container of ice cream can make 66 cones or it can make 44 sundaes. If 55 such containers of ice cream are used
to make 1212 cones, what is the
greatest number of sundaes that can be made with the ice cream that
remains?

Solution

One container of ice cream can make 66 cones.

Thus, 22 containers of ice cream can
make 2×6=122\times6=12 cones.

Since 1212 cones were made from 55 containers of ice cream, and it takes
22 containers of ice cream to make
1212 cones, then 52=35-2=3 containers of ice cream remain
after the 1212 cones are made.

One container of ice cream can make 44 sundaes.

Thus, the remaining 33 containers of
ice cream can make 3×4=123\times4=12
sundaes.
