John ate a total of 120 peanuts over four consecutive nights. Each night he ate 6 more peanuts than the night before. How many peanuts did he eat on the fourth night?

Suppose that John ate xx peanuts on the fourth night.

Since he ate 6 more peanuts each night than on the previous night, then he ate x6x-6 peanuts on the third night, (x6)6=x12(x-6)-6=x-12 peanuts on the second night, and (x12)6=x18(x-12)-6=x-18 peanuts on the first night.

Since John ate 120120 peanuts in total, then x+(x6)+(x12)+(x18)=120x+(x-6)+(x-12)+(x-18)=120, and so 4x36=1204x - 36 = 120 or 4x=1564x = 156 or x=39x = 39.

Therefore, John ate 39 peanuts on the fourth night.
