Solution

In WVZ\triangle WVZ, the measure of ZWV\angle ZWV is 90°90\degree. Using the Pythagorean theorem, we get WV2=VZ2WZ2=172152=289225=64WV^2=VZ^2-WZ^2=17^2-15^2=289-225=64 and so WV=8WV=8 (since WV>0WV>0). The area of trapezoid VXYZVXYZ can be determined by subtracting the area of WVZ\triangle WVZ from the area of square WXYZWXYZ. The area of square WXYZWXYZ is 152=22515^2=225 and the area of WVZ\triangle WVZ is 12(WV)(WZ)=12(8)(15)=60\frac12(WV)(WZ)=\frac12(8)(15)=60. The area of trapezoid VXYZVXYZ is 22560=165225-60=165.
