In the diagram, the number line between $0$ and $6$ is divided into $12$ equal parts. The numbers $M$ and $N$ are marked on the line.

The value of $N-M$ is

Since the number line between $0$ and $6$ is divided into $12$ equal pieces, then each piece has
length $\dfrac{6}{12}=0.5$ .

The location of $M$ is $2$ such pieces right of $0$ , and so the value of $M$ is $2\times0.5=1.0$ .

The location of $N$ is $3$ such pieces left of $6$ , and so the value of $N$ is $6-(3\times0.5)=4.5$ .

The value of $N-M=4.5-1.0=3.5$ .
