In the diagram, squares of side length 1 meet each other at their vertices.

The perimeter of each of the squares of side length 1 is 4×1=44 \times 1 = 4.

The perimeters of the 7 squares in the diagram do not overlap, and so the perimeter of the entire figure is 7×4=287 \times 4 = 28.
