The path that the ant walks from AA to BB is vertical and has length 5.

The path that the ant walks from BB
to CC is horizontal and has length

To determine the length of CACA, we
can use the Pythagorean Theorem because ABAB and BCBC meet at a right angle.

This gives $CA^2 = AB^2 + BC^2 = 5^2 + 8^2 =
25 + 64 = 89$.

Since CA>0CA > 0, then CA=89CA = \sqrt{89}.

Thus, the total distance that the ant walks is 5+8+895 + 8 + \sqrt{89} or 13+8913 + \sqrt{89}.
