In the diagram, line 1 has equation y=2x+6y=2x+6 and crosses the xx-axis at PP.

Figure 0

What is the xx-intercept of line 1?
Line 2 has slope −3-3 and intersects line 1 at Q(3,12)Q(3,12), as shown.

Determine the equation of line 2.
Line 2 crosses the xx-axis at RR, as shown.

Determine the area of △PQR\triangle PQR.

Solution

The xx-intercept of a line occurs at the point whose yy-coordinate is 0.

Substituting y=0y=0 into the equation of line 1, we get 0=2x+60=2x+6 or 2x=−62x=-6 and so x=−3x=-3.

Line 1 has xx-intercept −3-3. (Point PP has coordinates (−3,0)(-3,0).)
Solution 1

The equation of line 2 with slope −3-3 and yy-intercept bb is y=−3x+by=-3x+b.

Line 2 passes through Q(3,12)Q(3,12) and so x=3x=3 and y=12y=12 satisfies the equation of line 2.

Substituting, we get 12=−3(3)+b12=-3(3)+b or 12=−9+b12=-9+b and so b=21b=21.

The equation of line 2 is y=−3x+21y=-3x+21.

Solution 2

A line with slope mm and passing through the point (x1,y1)(x_1,y_1) has equation y−y1=m(x−x1)y-y_1=m(x-x_1).

Since line 2 has slope m=−3m=-3 and passes through Q(3,12)Q(3,12), the slope-point equation of line 2 is y−12=−3(x−3)y-12=-3(x-3).
We find the coordinates of point RR by substituting y=0y=0 into the equation of line 2.

This gives 0=−3x+210=-3x+21 or 3x=213x=21 and so x=7x=7.

That is, line 2 has xx-intercept 77 (point RR has coordinates (7,0)(7,0)).

If we let the base of △PQR\triangle PQR be side PRPR, then the height of the triangle is the vertical distance from QQ to PRPR.

Since QQ has yy-coordinate 12, then this height is 12.

The xx-coordinate of PP is −3-3 and the xx-coordinate of RR is 7. (Both yy-coordinates are 0.)

Therefore, PRPR has length 7−(−3)=107-(-3)=10.

Finally, the area of △PQR\triangle PQR is 12×10×12=60\frac12\times10\times12=60.
