What number goes in the box so that 2832+1=1\dfrac{28}{32}+\dfrac{1}{\square}=1?

Solution 1

Since 2832+1=1\dfrac{28}{32}+\dfrac{1}{\Box}=1 and
2832+432=3232=1\dfrac{28}{32}+\dfrac{4}{32}=\dfrac{32}{32}=1,
then 1=432\dfrac{1}{\square}=\dfrac{4}{32}.

Reducing 432\dfrac{4}{32} to lowest
terms, we get 432=18\dfrac{4}{32}=\dfrac{1}{8}, and so the
number that goes in the box is 88.

Solution 2

Since 2832+1=1\dfrac{28}{32}+\dfrac{1}{\Box}=1 and
2832+432=3232=1\dfrac{28}{32}+\dfrac{4}{32}=\dfrac{32}{32}=1,
then 1=432\dfrac{1}{\square}=\dfrac{4}{32}.
