Geometry Difficulty 1.4 Junior Find the answer Canada

A rectangle has length 8 cm and width π\pi cm. A semi-circle has the same area
as the rectangle. What is its radius?

Pick one

Solution

A rectangle with length 8 cm and width π\pi cm has area 8π cm28\pi\text{ cm}^2.

Suppose that the radius of the semi-circle is r cmr\text{ cm}.

The area of a circle with radius rr
cm is πr2 cm2\pi r^2\text{ cm}^2 and so
the area of the semi-circle is 12πr2 cm2\frac{1}{2}\pi r^2\text{ cm}^2.

Since the rectangle and the semi-circle have the same area, then 12πr2=8π\frac{1}{2}\pi r^2 = 8\pi and so πr2=16π\pi r^2 = 16\pi or r2=16r^2 = 16.

Since r>0r > 0, then r=4r = 4 and so the radius of the
semi-circle is 4 cm.
