Geometry Difficulty 3.2 AMC 10/12 Find the answer Canada

In the diagram, MNPQMNPQ is a rectangle with points MM, NN, PP, and QQ on the sides of XYZ\triangle XYZ, as shown.

If ZNM=68\angle{ZNM} = 68^\circ and XYZ=55\angle{XYZ} = 55^\circ, what is the measure of YXZ\angle{YXZ}?

Pick one

Solution

Since MNPQMNPQ is a rectangle, then NMQ\angle NMQ is a right angle and thus so is NMZ\angle NMZ.

The sum of the angles in NMZ\triangle NMZ is 180180^\circ, so NZM=180ZNMZMN=1806890=22\angle NZM = 180^\circ - \angle ZNM - \angle ZMN = 180^\circ - 68^\circ - 90^\circ = 22^\circ

Since the sum of the angles in ZXY\triangle ZXY is also 180180^\circ, then YXZ=180XZYXYZ=1802255=103\angle YXZ = 180^\circ - \angle XZY - \angle XYZ = 180^\circ - 22^\circ - 55^\circ = 103^\circ
