Geometry Difficulty 2.5 Junior Find the answer Canada

In the diagram, PQR\triangle PQR is isosceles with PQ=PRPQ=PR and PRS\triangle PRS is isosceles with PS=SR=xPS=SR=x.

Also, the perimeter of PQR\triangle PQR is 22, the perimeter of PRS\triangle PRS is 22, and the perimeter of PQRSPQRS is 24. What is the value of xx?

Pick one

Solution

Since PS=SR=xPS=SR=x and the perimeter of PRS\triangle PRS is 22, then PR=22PSSR=222xPR=22-PS-SR=22-2x.

Since PQ=PRPQ=PR and PR=222xPR=22-2x, then PQ=222xPQ=22-2x.

Since PQR\triangle PQR has perimeter 22, then RQ=22PRPQ=22(222x)(222x)=4x22RQ=22-PR-PQ = 22-(22-2x)-(22-2x)=4x-22.

Since the perimeter of PQRSPQRS is 24, then PQ+RQ+SR+PS=24(222x)+(4x22)+x+x=244x=24x=6\begin{aligned} PQ+RQ+SR+PS & = 24 \\ (22-2x)+(4x-22)+x+x & = 24 \\ 4x & = 24 \\ x & = 6\end{aligned} Therefore, x=6x=6.
