Suppose that xx and yy are integers satisfying 4x11-4\le x\le 11 and 9y179\le y\le 17. Which of the following
statements is correct for all such values of xx and yy?

2xy21-2\le x-y\le 21
6xy136\le x-y\le 13
13xy6-13\le x-y\le -6
5xy285\le x-y\le 28
21xy2-21\le x-y\le 2

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

The least possible value of xyx-y is when xx is minimized and yy is maximized.

The least possible value of xx is
4-4 and the greatest possible value
of yy is 1717, in which case we get xy=417=21x-y = -4-17=-21.

Attaining xy=21x-y = -21 rules out
options (A) $2xy\$-2\leq x-y\leq
21,(B), (B) 6xy6\leq x-y\leq 13,(C), (C) 13xy-13\leq x-y\leq -6$, and
(D) $5xy\$5\leq x-y\leq
28since since -21$ is
less than 2-2, 66, 13-13, and 55.

Note that the greatest possible value of xyx-y is when xx is maximized and yy is minimized. This happens when x=11x=11 and y=9y=9, giving xy=119=2x-y=11-9=2, so indeed xy2x-y\leq 2 (as in (E)) is true for all
such xx and yy.
