Algebra Difficulty 4.9 AIME Prove it Romania

Find the irrational numbers xx with the property that x2+xx^2 + x and x3+2x2x^3 + 2x^2 are integer numbers.

Solution

Denote x2+x=ax^2 + x = a and x3+2x2=bx^3 + 2x^2 = b. Then bax=x2=axb - a x = x^2 = a - x, hence x(a1)=bax(a - 1) = b - a. Since xx is an irrational number and a,ba, b are integers, we deduce that a=b=1a = b = 1, and, finally, x=1±52x = \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}.
