Algebra Difficulty 3.8 AMC 10/12 Find the answer South Africa

When aa is increased by 20%20\% and bb is decreased by 20%20\% the resulting values are equal. The ratio of aa to bb is

Pick one

Solution

120%120\% of aa is 65a\frac{6}{5}a while 80%80\% of bb is 45b\frac{4}{5}b.
We thus have 65a=45b\frac{6}{5}a = \frac{4}{5}b from which it follows that ab=45×56=23\frac{a}{b} = \frac{4}{5} \times \frac{5}{6} = \frac{2}{3}
