Algebra Difficulty 4.9 AIME Prove it Soviet Union

Problem:

Which is greater: 311131^{11} or 171417^{14}? [No calculators allowed!]

Solution

Solution:

172=289>93117^{2} = 289 > 9 \cdot 31. So 1714>9731717^{14} > 9^{7} 31^{7}. But 37=2187>3123^{7} = 2187 > 31^{2}. Hence 1714>311117^{14} > 31^{11}.
