Geometry Difficulty 4.4 AIME Find the answer Slovenia

The segment ABAB measures 2020 cm. The polygonal curve connecting the points AA and BB together with the segment ABAB forms 77 equilateral triangles. No segment of the polygonal curve lies on the segment ABAB. How long, in centimeters, is this polygonal curve?

Solution

Denote the lengths of the sides of these 77 equilateral triangles by a1,a2,,a7a_1, a_2, \dots, a_7. The length of the segment ABAB is then a1+a2++a7a_1 + a_2 + \dots + a_7, and the length of the polygonal curve from AA to BB is 2a1+2a2++2a7=2(a1+a2++a7)2a_1 + 2a_2 + \dots + 2a_7 = 2(a_1 + a_2 + \dots + a_7). Since this length is twice the length of the segment it must be equal to 4040 cm.
