Suppose that geometric sequence {an} satisfies a1−a2=3, a1−a3=2. Then the common ratio of {an} is ________.
A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.
Solution
Let the common ratio of {an} be q. Then
a1(1−q)a1(1−q2)=a1−a2=3,=a1−a3=2,
and thus 1+q=a1(1−q)a1(1−q2)=32. Therefore, q=−31.
