IMO Team Selection Test 1

Geometry Difficulty 8.2 Shortlist Prove it Netherlands

Let △ABC\triangle ABC be an acute triangle such that ∣AB∣+∣BC∣=4∣AC∣|AB| + |BC| = 4|AC| and ∣AB∣<∣BC∣|AB| < |BC|. Let DD be the intersection of the bisector of ∠ABC\angle ABC with the side ACAC. Points PP and QQ lie on segment BDBD such that ∣BP∣=2∣DQ∣|BP| = 2|DQ|. Let ℓ\ell be the line through PP parallel to ACAC. The line through QQ perpendicular to BDBD intersects the segments ABAB and BCBC in XX and YY, respectively. Suppose that both XX and YY lie on the opposite side of ℓ\ell to BB.
An ant starts their journey in XX and goes from there to a point on ACAC, then a point on ℓ\ell, then back to a (possibly different) point on ACAC and finally to YY. Prove that the length of the ant's shortest possible route is equal to 4∣XY∣4|XY|.

Solution

Let R,SR, S and TT be respectively the points where the ant is on ACAC the first time, is on ℓ\ell and is on ACAC the second time. Let ℓ′\ell' and S′S' be the reflections of ℓ\ell and SS in ACAC, and let Y′Y' be the reflection of YY in ℓ′\ell'. Then, because of the triangle inequality for the total length of the ant's path, we have
∣XR∣+∣RS∣+∣ST∣+∣TY∣=∣XR∣+∣RS′∣+∣S′T∣+∣TY∣≥∣XS′∣+∣S′Y∣=∣XS′∣+∣S′Y′∣≥∣XY′∣, \begin{aligned} |XR| + |RS| + |ST| + |TY| &= |XR| + |RS'| + |S'T| + |TY| \\ &\geq |XS'| + |S'Y| = |XS'| + |S'Y'| \\ &\geq |XY'|, \end{aligned}
with equality if S′S' lies on XY′XY', RR lies on XS′XS' and TT lies on S′YS'Y. So now we are left to prove that ∣XY′∣=4∣XY∣|XY'| = 4|XY|.

We redefine S′S' as the intersection point of XY′XY' and ℓ′\ell'. Then, by definition, ℓ′\ell' is the external bisector of ∠XS′Y\angle XS'Y. We also define B′B' as the intersection point of BQBQ with ℓ′\ell'. Then B′B' also lies on the perpendicular bisector of XYXY. Using the incentre-excentre lemma with respect to △XYS′\triangle XYS', we find that B′B' is the midpoint of the arc XYXY of the circumcircle of △XYS′\triangle XYS' that does contain S′S'. (Note that BQBQ is not parallel to ℓ′\ell' or perpendicular to it, because ℓ′∥AC\ell' \parallel AC and △BAC\triangle BAC is not isosceles. So B′B' is well-defined and unequal to S′S'.) In particular, XYB′S′XYB'S' is a cyclic quadrilateral. Because of our definition of ℓ′\ell', we have that B′B' is also the reflection of PP in DD. So, together with the condition that 2∣QD∣=∣BP∣2|QD| = |BP|, we calculate that
∣QB′∣=∣QD∣+∣DB′∣=∣QD∣+∣PD∣=∣QD∣+∣PQ∣+∣QD∣=∣BP∣+∣PQ∣=∣BQ∣. \begin{aligned} |QB'| &= |QD| + |DB'| = |QD| + |PD| \\ &= |QD| + |PQ| + |QD| = |BP| + |PQ| \\ &= |BQ|. \end{aligned}

Since QQ is also the midpoint of XYXY and the diagonals are perpendicular to each other, we conclude that BXB′YBXB'Y is a rhombus. We now angle chase
∠S′XY=180∘−∠S′B′Y=180∘−∠S′B′B−∠BB′Y=∠BDC−∠YBB′=∠DBA+∠BAD−∠BDA=∠BAC. \begin{align*} \angle S'XY &= 180^\circ - \angle S'B'Y = 180^\circ - \angle S'B'B - \angle BB'Y \\ &= \angle BDC - \angle YBB' = \angle DBA + \angle BAD - \angle BDA \\ &= \angle BAC. \end{align*}
Analogously, it holds that ∠S′YX=∠BCA\angle S'YX = \angle BCA. So △XYS′∼△ACB\triangle XYS' \sim \triangle ACB, so the condition ∣AB∣+∣BC∣=4∣AC∣|AB| + |BC| = 4|AC| also holds in △XYS′\triangle XYS'. We conclude that ∣XY′∣=∣XS′∣+∣S′Y∣=4∣XY∣|XY'| = |XS'| + |S'Y| = 4|XY|, which is exactly what we wanted to show. □\square
