Balls numbered 1,2,3,1, 2, 3, \ldots are deposited in 55 bins, labeled AA, BB, CC, DD, and EE, using the following procedure. Ball 11 is deposited in bin AA, and balls 22 and 33 are deposited in bin BB. The next 33 balls are deposited in bin CC, the next 44 in bin DD, and so on, cycling back to bin AA after balls are deposited in bin EE. (For example, balls numbered 22,23,,2822, 23, \ldots, 28 are deposited in bin BB at step 77 of this process.) In which bin is ball 20242024 deposited?

Pick one

Solution

Answer (D): After nn steps, a total of 1+2+3++n=12n(n+1)1+2+3+\dots+n = \frac{1}{2}n(n+1) balls have been deposited. In particular, after step n=63n = 63, a total of 126364=2016\frac{1}{2} \cdot 63 \cdot 64 = 2016 balls have been deposited. The next batch of 6464 balls will include ball 20242024. Because 6464 has remainder 44 when divided by 55, ball 20242024 is deposited in bin DD.
