Geometry Difficulty 4.1 AIME Find the answer South Africa

Five squares (labelled AA, BB, CC, DD and EE) are drawn along a straight line, each touching the next square at a vertex, as shown in the diagram. Square BB has an area of 2020. Square CC has a side length of 44. Square DD has double the area of square BB. What is the area of square EE?

Solution

Denote the side lengths of squares AA, BB, CC, DD, EE by aa, bb, cc, dd, ee respectively. The two right-angled triangles enclosed by squares CC, DD, EE and the line are congruent to each other and have sides cc, dd, ee, so by Pythagoras' theorem d2=c2+e2d^2 = c^2 + e^2. We are given that c2=42=16c^2 = 4^2 = 16 and d2=2×20=40d^2 = 2 \times 20 = 40, so e2=4016=24e^2 = 40 - 16 = 24.
