Suppose ABCABC is a scalene right triangle, and PP is the point on hypotenuse AC\overline{AC} such that ABP=45\angle ABP = 45^{\circ}. Given that AP=1AP = 1 and CP=2CP = 2, compute the area of ABCABC.

Notice that BP\overline{BP} bisects the right angle at BB. Thus, we write AB=2xAB = 2x, BC=xBC = x. By the Pythagorean theorem, 5x2=95x^{2} = 9, from which the area 12(x)(2x)=x2=95\frac{1}{2}(x)(2x) = x^{2} = \frac{9}{5}.
