Geometry Difficulty 4.7 AIME Prove it Bulgaria

Determine the locus of the points MM which are interior for the convex quadrilateral ABCDABCD and the areas of the quadrilaterals ABCMABCM and AMCDAMCD are equal.

Solution

The locus is the segment PQPQ such that PQACPQ \parallel AC and d(PQ,AC)=SABCSACDACd(PQ, AC) = \frac{|S_{ABC} - S_{ACD}|}{AC}, where SABCS_{ABC} and SACDS_{ACD} are the areas of triangles ABCABC and ACDACD, respectively.
