Geometry Difficulty 4.9 AIME Prove it South Africa

In the figure, ABCDABCD is a rectangle.
The area of triangle DECDEC is 9 cm29\ \text{cm}^2 and BE=25BCBE = \frac{2}{5} BC.
What is the area of ABCDABCD in cm2\text{cm}^2?

Figure 1

Solution

Let BE=2xBE = 2x; then with BE=25BCBE = \frac{2}{5} BC we must have EC=3xEC = 3x.
Now for DEC\triangle DEC, 12(3x)(DC)=9\frac{1}{2}(3x)(DC) = 9, giving DC=6xDC = \frac{6}{x}, and since BC=5xBC = 5x,
the area of rectangle ABCDABCD is 5x6x=305x \cdot \frac{6}{x} = 30.
