Number theory Difficulty 4.0 AMC 10/12 Find the answer South Africa

If n+313\frac{n+3}{13} is a positive integer, then the remainder when nn is divided by 1313 is

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

10 Suppose n+313=k\frac{n+3}{13} = k; then n=13k3n = 13k - 3 or n=13(k1)+10n = 13(k-1) + 10. This shows that nn leaves remainder 1010 on division by 1313.
