Algebra Difficulty 2.3 Junior Find the answer

Given: a=5|a| = 5, and a+b=0a + b = 0, then ab=a - b =

Solution

Since a=5|a| = 5, it follows that a=±5a = \pm 5.

Since a+b=0a + b = 0, it follows that b=ab = -a, which means b=±5b = \pm 5.

There are two cases to consider:
1. When a=5a = 5, b=5b = -5, then ab=10a - b = 10;
2. When a=5a = -5, b=5b = 5, then ab=10a - b = -10;

Therefore, the answer is ±10\boxed{\pm 10}.
