Algebra Difficulty 4.7 AIME Find the answer

9. The solution to the equation 1x2+x2+1x2+7x+10=2\frac{1}{x^{2}+x-2}+\frac{1}{x^{2}+7 x+10}=2 is

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

9. 2±10-2 \pm \sqrt{10}.

The original equation is transformed into
1(x+2)(x1)+1(x+2)(x+5)=2, \frac{1}{(x+2)(x-1)}+\frac{1}{(x+2)(x+5)}=2,

which simplifies to x2+4x6=0x^{2}+4 x-6=0, solving for xx yields x=2±10x=-2 \pm \sqrt{10}.
Upon verification, the two roots of the original equation are x=2±10x=-2 \pm \sqrt{10}.
