In the expression x+1x1\frac{x + 1}{x - 1} each xx is replaced by x+1x1\frac{x + 1}{x - 1}. The resulting expression, evaluated for x=12x = \frac{1}{2}, equals:

Solution

When x=12x=\frac{1}{2}, x+1x1=3\frac{x+1}{x-1}=-3, substituting 3-3 for xx in the original equation we get:
3+131=24=12    (E) None of these\frac{-3+1}{-3-1}=\frac{-2}{-4}=\frac{1}{2}\implies \boxed{\mathbf{(E)}\text{ None of these}}.
