Number theory Difficulty 4.7 AIME Find the answer

5. ( a ) Find two natural numbers xx and yy such that xy+xx y + x and xy+yx y + y are squares of two different natural numbers.
(b) Can such a pair of xx and yy be found between 988 and 1991?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

5. (a) For example, we can take x=1,y=8x=1, y=8.
( b) For definiteness, let y>xy>x. Then, we have x23x+1x^{2}3 x+1, which is impossible in the given interval.
