Geometry Difficulty 2.3 Junior Find the answer

Four cubes with edge lengths 11, 22, 33, and 44 are stacked as shown. What is the length of the portion of XY\overline{XY} contained in the cube with edge length 33?

Pick one

Solution

By Pythagorean Theorem in three dimensions, the distance XYXY is 42+42+102=233\sqrt{4^2+4^2+10^2}=2\sqrt{33}.
Let the length of the segment XYXY that is inside the cube with side length 33 be xx. By similar triangles, x3=23310\dfrac{x}{3}=\dfrac{2\sqrt{33}}{10}, giving x=(A) 3335skrx=\boxed{\textbf{(A) }\dfrac{3\sqrt{33}}{5}} skr-.
