Algebra Difficulty 1.5 Junior Find the answer

On the number line, points MM and NN divide LPL P into three equal parts. What is the value at MM?

Solution

The difference between 16\frac{1}{6} and 112\frac{1}{12} is 16112=212112=112\frac{1}{6}-\frac{1}{12}=\frac{2}{12}-\frac{1}{12}=\frac{1}{12}, so LP=112L P=\frac{1}{12}. Since LPL P is divided into three equal parts, then this distance is divided into three equal parts, each equal to 112÷3=112×13=136\frac{1}{12} \div 3=\frac{1}{12} \times \frac{1}{3}=\frac{1}{36}. Therefore, MM is located 136\frac{1}{36} to the right of LL. Thus, the value at MM is 112+136=336+136=436=19\frac{1}{12}+\frac{1}{36}=\frac{3}{36}+\frac{1}{36}=\frac{4}{36}=\frac{1}{9}.
