Geometry Difficulty 4.7 AIME Find the answer

Let triangle ABCA B C have AB=5,BC=6A B=5, B C=6, and AC=7A C=7, with circumcenter OO. Extend ray ABA B to point DD such that BD=5B D=5, and extend ray BCB C to point EE such that OD=OEO D=O E. Find CEC E.

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Because OD=OE,DO D=O E, D and EE have equal power with respect to the circle, so (EC)(EB)=(DB)(DA)=50(E C)(E B)=(D B)(D A)=50. Letting EC=xE C=x, we have x(x+6)=50x(x+6)=50, and taking the positive root gives x=593x=\sqrt{59}-3.
