Geometry Difficulty 4.8 AIME Find the answer

Let ABCDA B C D be a convex quadrilateral such that ABD=BCD=90\angle A B D=\angle B C D=90^{\circ}, and let MM be the midpoint of segment BDB D. Suppose that CM=2C M=2 and AM=3A M=3. Compute ADA D.

Solution

Since triangle BCDB C D is a right triangle, we have CM=BM=DM=2C M=B M=D M=2. With AM=3A M=3 and ABM=90\angle A B M=90^{\circ}, we get AB=5A B=\sqrt{5}. Now AD2=AB2+BD2=5+16=21A D^{2}=A B^{2}+B D^{2}=5+16=21 so AD=21A D=\sqrt{21}.
