Algebra Difficulty 2.2 Junior Find the answer

If xx and yy are positive integers with 3x5y=2253^{x} 5^{y} = 225, what is the value of x+yx + y?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

Since 152=22515^{2}=225 and 15=3515=3 \cdot 5, then 225=152=(35)2=3252225=15^{2}=(3 \cdot 5)^{2}=3^{2} \cdot 5^{2}. Therefore, x=2x=2 and y=2y=2, so x+y=4x+y=4.
