Algebra Difficulty 1.9 Junior Find the answer

If a(x+b)=3x+12a(x+b)=3 x+12 for all values of xx, what is the value of a+ba+b?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since a(x+b)=3x+12a(x+b)=3 x+12 for all xx, then ax+ab=3x+12a x+a b=3 x+12 for all xx. Since the equation is true for all xx, then the coefficients on the left side must match the coefficients on the right side. Therefore, a=3a=3 and ab=12a b=12, which gives 3b=123 b=12 or b=4b=4. Finally, a+b=3+4=7a+b=3+4=7.
