Geometry Difficulty 2.4 Junior Find the answer

A rectangle has width xx and length yy. The rectangle is cut along the horizontal and vertical dotted lines to produce four smaller rectangles. The sum of the perimeters of these four rectangles is 24. What is the value of x+yx+y?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

The sum of the lengths of the horizontal line segments is 4x4x, because the tops of the four small rectangles contribute a total of 2x2x to their combined perimeter and the bottoms contribute a total of 2x2x. Similarly, the sum of the lengths of the vertical line segments is 4y4y. In other words, the sum of the perimeters of the four rectangles is 4x+4y4x + 4y. Since the sum of the perimeters also equals 24, then 4x+4y=244x + 4y = 24 and so x+y=6x + y = 6.
