Algebra Difficulty 4.6 AIME Find the answer

Points A,B,CA, B, C, and DD lie on a line in that order such that ABBC=DACD\frac{A B}{B C}=\frac{D A}{C D}. If AC=3A C=3 and BD=4B D=4, find ADA D.

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

Let BC=xB C=x, then the equation becomes 3xx=7x4x\frac{3-x}{x}=\frac{7-x}{4-x}. This simplifies to a quadratic equation with solutions x=1x=1 and x=6x=6. Since x<3x<3, we have x=1x=1 and AD=7x=6A D=7-x=6.
