Algebra Difficulty 2.2 Junior Find the answer

If xx and yy are positive integers with x+y=31x+y=31, what is the largest possible value of xyx y?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

First, we note that the values of xx and yy cannot be equal since they are integers and x+yx+y is odd. Next, we look at the case when x>yx>y. We list the fifteen possible pairs of values for xx and yy and the corresponding values of xyx y. Therefore, the largest possible value for xyx y is 240. Note that the largest value occurs when xx and yy are as close together as possible.
