Geometry Difficulty 2.9 Junior Find the answer

What fraction of the original rectangle is shaded if a rectangle is divided into two vertical strips of equal width, with the left strip divided into three equal parts and the right strip divided into four equal parts?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

Each of the vertical strips accounts for 12\frac{1}{2} of the total area of the rectangle. The left strip is divided into three equal pieces, so 23\frac{2}{3} of the left strip is shaded, accounting for 23imes12=13\frac{2}{3} imes \frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{3} of the large rectangle. The right strip is divided into four equal pieces, so 24=12\frac{2}{4}=\frac{1}{2} of the right strip is shaded, accounting for 12imes12=14\frac{1}{2} imes \frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{4} of the large rectangle. Therefore, the total fraction of the rectangle that is shaded is 13+14=412+312=712\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{4}=\frac{4}{12}+\frac{3}{12}=\frac{7}{12}.
