Geometry Difficulty 2.1 Junior Find the answer

Points A,B,CA, B, C, and DD are on a line in that order. The distance from AA to DD is 24. The distance from BB to DD is 3 times the distance from AA to BB. Point CC is halfway between BB and DD. What is the distance from AA to CC?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since BB is between AA and DD and BD=3ABB D=3 A B, then BB splits ADA D in the ratio 1:31: 3. Since AD=24A D=24, then AB=6A B=6 and BD=18B D=18. Since CC is halfway between BB and DD, then B C= rac{1}{2} B D=9. Thus, AC=AB+BC=6+9=15A C=A B+B C=6+9=15.
