Official solution

The area of the rectangle with length xx and width yy is x×yx\times y.

The area of the triangle with base 16 and height xx is 12×16×x\frac12\times 16\times x or 8×x8\times x.

The area of the rectangle is equal to the area of the triangle, or x×y=8×xx\times y=8\times x, and so y=8y=8.
