Official solution

Since a2=9a^2=9, then a4=(a2)2=92=81a^4 = (a^2)^2 = 9^2 = 81.

Alternatively, we note that since a2=9a^2 = 9, then a=±3a = \pm 3. If a=3a=3, then a4=34=81a^4 = 3^4 = 81 and if a=3a=-3, then a4=(3)4=34=81a^4 = (-3)^4 = 3^4 = 81.
