Official solution

The large square with side length 66 has area 6×6=366\times6=36. The shaded squares with side lengths 33, 22 and 11, have areas 3×3=93\times3=9, and 2×2=42\times2=4, and 1×1=11\times1=1, respectively. The total area of the shaded regions is 9+4+1=149+4+1=14. The total area of the unshaded region is equal to the area of the shaded regions subtracted from the area of the large square, or 3614=2236-14=22.
