Problem 1387

AIME late
Number theory Difficulty 5.3 Prove it Ukrainian Mathematical Olympiad · Ukraine

Find all positive integers aa, 100≤a≤999100 \le a \le 999, such that the decimal values of a2a^2 and (3a−2)2(3a - 2)^2 have the same three-digits endings.

This one wants a proof. Work it on paper, then read the official solution and mark yourself. Be honest about it: the record is only any use to you if it is.

Маємо: (3a−2)2−a2=1000k(3a-2)^2 - a^2 = 1000k.
Тобто, (2a−1)(a−1)=250k=2⋅53⋅k(2a-1)(a-1) = 250k = 2 \cdot 5^3 \cdot k.
Числа 2a−12a-1 і a−1a-1 взаємно прості, причому перше з них непарне. Отже, друге число парне, і, відповідно, число aa непарне. Звідси випливає, що a−1=250a-1=250, або ж 2a−1=1252a-1=125. Таким чином, непарне число aa з проміжку 100≤a≤999100 \le a \le 999 задовольняє умову задачі тоді й тільки тоді, коли a∈{251;501;751}a \in \{251; 501; 751\} або 2a−1∈{375;625;875;1125;1375;1625;1875}2a-1 \in \{375; 625; 875; 1125; 1375; 1625; 1875\}.
