The cube ABCD′A′B′C′D′ABCD'A'B'C'D' has edges of length aa. Take the points E∈(AB)E \in (AB) and F∈(BC)F \in (BC) so that AE+CF=EFAE + CF = EF.
a) Find the measure of the angle of the planes (D′DE)(D'DE) and (D′DF)(D'DF).
b) Compute the distance from D′D' to the straight line EFEF.

Official solution

a) Extend the segment BABA with AH≡FCAH \equiv FC. Then △DAH≡△DCF\triangle DAH \equiv \triangle DCF (SAS), whence HDA‾≡FDC‾\overline{HDA} \equiv \overline{FDC}, so m(HDF‾)=90∘m(\overline{HDF}) = 90^\circ. Then [DH]≡[DF][DH] \equiv [DF], leads to △DHE≡△DFE\triangle DHE \equiv \triangle DFE (SSS) and from here m(FDE‾)=m(HDE‾)=45∘m(\overline{FDE}) = m(\overline{HDE}) = 45^\circ. Since FD⊥DD′FD \perp DD' and ED⊥DD′ED \perp DD', it follows that m((D′DE),(D′DF))=m(FDE‾)=45∘m((D'DE), (D'DF)) = m(\overline{FDE}) = 45^\circ.

b) Denote PP the orthogonal projection of the point DD onto EFEF. The Three Perpendiculars Theorem yields D′P⊥EFD'P \perp EF, hence d(D′,EF)=D′Pd(D', EF) = D'P. The congruence ΔDHE≡ΔDFE\Delta DHE \equiv \Delta DFE gives DP=AD=aDP = AD = a. Finally, from Pythagoras' Theorem, D′P=a2D'P = a\sqrt{2}.
