Di un triangolo di vertici A,B,CA, B, C sappiamo che AB=5AB = 5, BC=4BC = 4 e AC=AMAC = AM, dove MM è il punto medio del lato BCBC. Quanto vale la lunghezza del lato ACAC?

La risposta è (B)\mathbf{(B)}.

Poiché MM è punto medio otteniamo che BM=MC=2BM = MC = 2. Sia HH il punto medio di MCMC, e in particolare MH=HC=1MH = HC = 1; dato che il triangolo AMCAMC è isoscele su base MCMC, HH è anche il piede dell'altezza e perciò l'angolo AHB\angle AHB è retto.

Dunque il triangolo ABHABH è rettangolo, con ipotenusa ABAB lunga 55 e cateto BHBH lungo 33; ne consegue che AH=4AH = 4. Infine ACAC è ipotenusa del triangolo AHCAHC, perciò
AC=42+12=17 AC = \sqrt{4^2 + 1^2} = \sqrt{17}
