Problem 473

AMC 12 late, AIME early
Geometry Difficulty 4.8 Find the answer

8. The decagon ABCDPQRSTUVWA B C D P Q R S T U V W has two parallel bases: square ABCDA B C D and octagon PQRSTUVWP Q R S T U V W, all angles of which are equal, and eight lateral faces: triangles APQ,BRS,CTU,DVWA P Q, B R S, C T U, D V W and rectangles DAPW,ABRQ,BCTSD A P W, A B R Q, B C T S and CDVUC D V U. It is known that the area of the section of the decagon by a plane passing through points D,QD, Q and SS is 2299480,AB=2,PQ=1\frac{2299}{480},|A B|=\sqrt{2},|P Q|=1. Find the distance between the bases of the decagon. Write the found value in the answer, rounding it if necessary.

A number or a short expression. Spacing, $ signs and \frac vs / are all fine.

Official solution

Answer: 1.41 . (The exact value 2(m=2,k=1/2)\sqrt{2}(m=\sqrt{2}, k=1 / 2).)
