Problem 980

AIME late
Geometry Difficulty 6.0 Prove it

[ \quad Properties and characteristics of a parallelogram ]] [ Rectangles and squares. Properties and characteristics]

In parallelogram ABCDA B C D, heights BMB M and BNB N are drawn from vertex BB of the obtuse angle, and heights DPD P and DQD Q are drawn from vertex DD.

Prove that points M,N,PM, N, P, and QQ are the vertices of a rectangle.

This one wants a proof. Work it on paper, then read the official solution and mark yourself. Be honest about it: the record is only any use to you if it is.

Official solution

Let, for definiteness, point NN lie on line ADA D, and point QQ - on line ABA B (see fig.). Then the diagonals BDB D and PNP N of rectangle PBNDP B N D are equal and intersect at their common midpoint OO. Similarly, the diagonals BDB D and QMQ M of rectangle QBMDQ B M D are equal and intersect at their common midpoint OO. Therefore, the diagonals PNP N and QMQ M of quadrilateral PQNMP Q N M are equal and intersect at their common midpoint OO. Hence, PQNMP Q N M is a rectangle.
